One person is dead and several others injured after a shooting in the southernmost section of the United States’ Marine Corps recruiting depot in San Diego.

Depot Lt. Ray Griggs says two people were transported to a hospital in critical condition and two others to a hospital in fair condition after the shooting.

A woman was found dead at the scene, Griggs said.

Police officers responding to a report of shots fired entered the facility and cleared the scene, San Diego Police Officer Hannah Hetzer said in a statement.

“There were no large-scale lockdowns within the campus,” the statement said.

A source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN that the shooting occurred at the naval installation’s physical fitness center in Camp Pendleton. The source said the shooter may have been a male sailor.

Photos on social media showed numerous police vehicles on a hill overlooking the gym. Fire engines stood nearby.

Images from the Associated Press showed emergency workers bending over a victim on a stretcher.

The shooting comes as US bases have been on edge in the aftermath of this June’s attack at Fort Hood in Texas.
